Regional Training Course on Basic Introduction to Nuclear Forensics....(13–17 July 2026 )| Colombo, Sri Lanka
The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (SLAERC), as the national competent authority for nuclear security in Sri Lanka, is hosting the Regional Training Course on Basic Introduction to Nuclear Forensics in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The training programme is being held from 13th to 17th July 2026 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
This important regional initiative is organized as an outcome of the Integrated Nuclear Security Sustainability Plan (INSSP) and the implementation discussions held in Sri Lanka in December 2025. The programme reflects Sri Lanka's continued commitment to strengthening nuclear security and enhancing both national and regional capacities to address emerging threats involving nuclear and other radioactive material.
The training course brings together approximately 20 participants, including representatives from IAEA Member States such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Mongolia, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. Officials from the IAEA and internationally recognized experts in nuclear forensics are also participating in the programme.
The primary objective of the training is to familiarize participants with the role of nuclear forensics within a national response framework for effectively addressing criminal or other intentional unauthorized acts involving nuclear or other radioactive material, associated facilities, or related activities. The course is designed to enhance participants' understanding of nuclear forensic principles, investigative methodologies, inter-agency coordination, and the application of nuclear forensics in support of national and international nuclear security.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the Ramada by Wyndham Colombo, No. 30, Sir Mohamed Macan Markar Mawatha, Colombo 03.
The event was graced by Hon. Prof. Chrishantha Abeysena, Minister of Science and Technology, as the Chief Guest. In his inaugural address, the Hon. Minister emphasized the importance of nuclear security in protecting people and the environment and highlighted Sri Lanka's growing regional role in promoting nuclear security through hosting international capacity-building programmes in collaboration with the IAEA.
The ceremony was also attended by several distinguished guests, including:

- Mr. Alexandru Florin and Mr. Gregory Brennecka, International Experts of the IAEA
- Prof. Jagath Pitawala, Chairman, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (SLAERC); who delivered the welcome address and outlined the objectives of the training programme.

- Mr. Prageeth Kadadunna, Director (Inspection & Enforcement), SLAERC

This regional training programme represents a significant milestone in strengthening cooperation among IAEA Member States and enhancing national capabilities in nuclear security and nuclear forensic response. By promoting knowledge sharing, regional collaboration, and the application of international best practices, the programme contributes to global efforts to prevent, detect, and respond effectively to nuclear security threats involving nuclear and other radioactive material.
