National Training Course on Radiation Protection for Operators Working in Industrial and Medical Facilities Involving Category I & II Sources, Linear Accelerators & Nuclear Medicine
The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (Council) conducted a three -day “National Training Course on Radiation Protection for Operators Working in Industrial and Medical Facilities Involving Category I & II Sources, Linear Accelerators and Nuclear Medicine " from 01st – 3rdJuly 2026.A total of 25 participants from government and private institutions attended in this training programme.
The purpose of this training course was to enhance participants' knowledge and practical understanding of radiation protection through following objectives.
- To fulfill regulatory requirement for radiation protection training.
- To provide a better understanding of philosophy and principles of radiation protection.
- To enhance understanding of regulatory requirements and the international system of radiation protection.
- To create awareness on the biological effects and risk of ionizing radiation.
- To improve understanding of practical aspects of protecting workers & the general public .
- To promote the development of a safety and security culture among radiation workers.
- To familiarize participants with emergency response procedures for radiological emergencies.
- To enhance understanding of the security of radioactive materials.
The programme featured a series of lectures delivered by the scientific staff of the Council,covering key topics such as;
- Basic radiation physics
- International system of radiation protection
- Biological effects of radiation
- Regulatory program of the Council
- Radiation hazard evaluation and control
- Radioactive waste management
- Development of a safety and security culture among the radiation workers
- Transport of radioactive materials
- Emergency management, etc..
A major highlight of the training was a scenario-based discussion in which participants practiced their roles in responding to work-related radiological incidents and exercised their decision-making skills.
At the conclusion of the course ,all participants were awarded certificates based on their attendance .
The Council conducts similar training courses annually to enable radiation workers to update their knowledge on radiation protection.
Mr. Kapila De Silva,Director General and Mr.Prageeth Kadadunna,Director(Inspection and Enforcement)attended the inauguration session and delivered opening remarks, and emphasized the importance of conducting such training programmes to strengthen the national regulatory regime.
Mrs. Chamini Herath,Deputy Director, served as the Course Director, and Mrs.Dinusha Kulathilaka,Scientific Officer coordinated the programme.
