The present Chairman is Professor H. M. J. C. Pitawala ,Department of Science & Technology Faculty of Applied Sciences Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka Badulla who assumed duties as the Chairman on 14th February 2025. Prof. Pitawala is an experienced university professor in Physics. He obtained his Bachelor degree from University of Peradeniya as special degree in Physics. Then he continued his higher studies and completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Chalmers University of Technology, 2012, Sweden. in Materials Science.

He joined to Department of Science and Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Uva-Wellassa University of Sri Lanka on 01st of October 2013 as a Senior lecturer and continued as Senior lecturer up to 17th October 2019. Prof Pitawala worked as the Head of Department of Science and Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences during the period of 15th May 2017 to 28th May 2020. He became as professor on 17th October 2019 and work as Dean Faculty of Applied Sciences, Uva-Wellassa university of Sri Lanka during the period of 28th May 2020 to 27th May 2023.

Prof. Pitawala published 25 publications in peer review journals and 7 patents has been received to him.

Mr. Kapila De Silva, was appointed as the Director General (Cover-up) of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council on 01st March, 2023.

He has obtained his first degree in B.Sc. special in Chemistry from the University of Peradeniya and a M.Sc. degree in Nuclear Science from the University of Colombo. He obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Radiation Protection from National University of Malaysia

Mr. Kapila has joined the Atomic Energy Authority of Sri Lanka (AEA) (predecessor of the Regulatory Council) as a Scientific Officer on 02nd of August, 1999 and had worked there until he was opted to become a staff member of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy regulatory Council On 01st January, 2015. He had been working at the AEA as a Senior Scientific Officer (Division of Radiation Protection & Regulations) till he was opted to become a member of the Council.

Mr. H.J. Premakumara

Jayantha Premakumara is currently serving as the Deputy Director – Inspection (Industrial Applications and Enforcement) at the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (SLAERC). He has extensive experience in radiation safety regulation, industrial and medical inspections, nuclear security, safeguards, and emergency preparedness and response activities.

He graduated with First Class Honours in Physics from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2011. He later obtained a Master’s Degree in Medical Physics from the Postgraduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya, in 2021. Throughout his professional career, he has participated in several international training programmes related to nuclear safety, radiation source safety, nuclear security, and emergency preparedness. In 2017, he completed a postgraduate programme on Radiation Source Safety at the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, Malaysia. In 2018, he attended the Nuclear Plant Safety Programme conducted by the Wakasa Wan Energy Research Center, Japan, and the Nuclear Security School organized by the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN). In 2024, he completed the School on Emergency Preparedness and Response conducted by the China Institute for Radiation Protection.

He began his professional career at the Atomic Energy Authority as a Scientific Officer from 2013 to 2014, where he was involved in regulatory inspection and authorization activities. He then joined the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (SLAERC) and served as a Scientific Officer in the Medical Inspection Section from 2015 to 2023. Subsequently, he served as a Senior Scientific Officer in the Industrial Inspection Section from 2023 to 2024, carrying out industrial inspections, enforcement activities, safeguards activities, and emergency preparedness and response functions.

In recognition of his professional experience and contributions to the regulatory sector, he was promoted to the position of Deputy Director – Inspection (Industrial Applications and Enforcement) at Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (SLAERC).
