National Training Course on “Radiation Protection for RPOs” working in Radiotherapy/Nuclear Medicine Facilities, 22-23 March 2023


The Sri Lankan Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (Council) conducted the “National Training Course on Radiation Protection for RPOs working in Radiotherapy/Nuclear Medicine Facilities on 22 & 23 March 2023 in the auditorium of the Council. 08 participants attended the training course from Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine Facilities. Lectures were conducted by the Council officers and external resource persons (Former Director General of SLAERC).

Purpose of this training course was to qualify radiation protection officers on radiation protection. An examination will be hold after 3 weeks of the course (21 April, 2023). Those who passed the examination will be awarded certificates which are valid for 4 years.

Objective of the training course is as follows

  • Better understanding of philosophy and principles of radiation protection
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and international system of radiation protection
  • Better understanding of responsibilities of RPO
  • Understanding of practical aspects of protection of workers, patients & general public
  • Understanding the importance & practical aspects of quality assurance in Nuclear Medicine Departments and radiotherapy departments

The Council conducts similar training courses every year to facilitate RPOs to get necessary qualifications of radiation protection as after 2025, only RPOs who have obtained certificates will be authorized in the licence.

Mr. Saminda Jayasekara, Chairman of the Council delivered opening remarks and Mr. Kapila De Silva, Director General (Cover-up) of the Council explained the importance of having this type of training course for development of the regulatory regime.

National Training Course on “Preparation, Conduct and Evaluation of Exercises to Test Preparedness and Response to a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency”, 27 February - 03 March 2023


The particular training course was jointly organized by the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (Council) and Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under its technical cooperation (TC) project on “Strengthening National Capabilities for responding to a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency”, The purpose of the training course is to develop a national action plan for training and exercises, preparation of an exercise manual for conducting national radiological emergency exercises. The total of 29 participants from Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB), Sri Lanka Armed Forces, Sri Lanka Police and STF, Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Ministry of Health, Department of Meteorology, Airport and Aviation Services, Disaster Management Centre, 1990 Suwa Seriya Foundation, Sri Lanka Customs and Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Following three IAEA experts were assigned by the IAEA for conducting above event.

  • Mr. Prashant Maharaj, Australia
  • Ms. Nahla Suleiman Mohammed Fadlalla, Sudan

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mr. Anil Ranjith, Director General (DG) of the Council who delivered opening remarks by giving importance of having this type of training programme to implement the EMP of Sri Lanka. The other distinguished invitees of this ceremony are Air vice Marshal Waruna Gunawardana (SLAF), Professor S.R.D. Rosa (SLAEB), Dr. Viraj Edirisinghe (SLAEB), Mr. Anura Jayathilaka (SLAEB) and Mr. Ranjith Bandara (SLAEB).

Mr. Prageeth Kadadunna, Acting Director (Authorization) and National Emergency Coordinator delivered vote of thanks at the ceremony.

The main topics covered of this training are Introduction to emergency exercises, Types of exercises, methods and tools, Exercise program, process, team, specifications, Exercise scenario and data, Exercise control, guidance and evaluation, Liaison with the public and media, Nuclear security events – special considerations, International exercises, Development of exercise specifications and scenario, Development of exercise manual, Development of controller, evaluator and player guides

All the lectures of the training programme were conducted by above three IAEA experts and also contained working sessions by three groups. As the outcome Trainees have developed three emergency scenarios which can be used to include in National exercise manual and created working group for fulfilling this task.

Closing ceremony was held on 03 March, 2023 and all three IAEA experts, Major General A.H.L.G. Amarapala (SL Army), DG of the Council, Director Inspection, Deputy Directors and Scientific staff of the Council attended to the ceremony. This was highly successive training programme conducted by the Council under this Project.

National training course on radiation protection for operators/users in Diagnostic X-ray facilities, 17-19 August, 2022


The Sri Lankan Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (Council) conducted the “National Training Course on Radiation Protection for Operators working in Diagnostic X-ray facilities” from 17th – 19th August 2022 in Colombo. 27 participants attended the training course from Colombo district. Lectures and exercises were conducted by the Council officers.

Purpose of this training course was to qualify radiographers and technologists on radiation protection. After three days’ training course, an examination was held after 3 weeks of the course (07th September 2022). Those who passed the examination was awarded certificates which are valid for 4 years.

Objective of the training course is as follow:

  • To use the training certificate to fulfill regulatory requirement of radiation protection trainings required for appointment as operator/user
  • Better understanding of philosophy and principles of radiation protection
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and international system of radiation protection
  • Understanding of practical aspects of protection of workers, patients & general public
  • Understanding the importance & practical aspects of quality assurance in diagnostic radiology
  • Development of safety culture among radiation workers

The Council conducts similar training courses every year to facilitate workers to get necessary qualifications of radiation protection as after 2025, only workers who have obtained certificates will be authorized in the licence

Anil Ranjith, Director General of the Council attended the inauguration session and Chairman delivered opening remarks while Director General explained the importance of having this type of training course for development of the regulatory regime.
